REMOVAL OF SKIN NEOFORMATIONS

Laser removal

What is it about?

A laser is a device that emits a uniform beam of light through an optical amplification process. There are different types of lasers, gas, fiber, solid state, dye, diode and excimer. The term “laser” was born as an acronym for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”.

When is laser used?

A question that is often asked by the patient is whether a mole can be removed with a laser or surgically: the plastic surgeon must be very clear: some moles can be treated with a laser or with a laser-surgical technique, shaving, in which the neoformation is removed at the base. This can only be done in a certain type of moles, ie those that are aesthetically ugly, lumpy or pedunculated, detected, that the patient does not like. In the other moles, the darker and more pigmented melanocytic moles, the technique must be surgical: the nevus must be surgically removed and examined at histological examination: the risk of turning towards a melanoma is too high and must never be run.

What does the treatment consist of?

The treatment must be preceded by local anesthesia, which makes the treatment painless. The neoformation is then treated. There are no scars left. After the surgery, a dressing with anesthetic ointment is performed (we usually use Gentalyn) and a simple flat dressing with sterile gauze and plaster. The antibiotic ointment should be used for about a week.

The laser treatment is performed under local anesthesia in peace in our clinic.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Laser treatment is performed after a small injection of topical local anesthetic. It is absolutely painless and is performed routinely in our clinic, usually at the same time as the visit.

How to behave after the treatment?

Particular attention should be paid to avoiding exposure to the sun for about 3/4 months. The small and imperceptible scar that forms as a result of the treatment is in fact formed by new, exuberant cells, which tend to absorb the pigment, like the nearby skin, but to retain it more. This would form a tattoo and be visible over time as a darker spot. For this reason it is essential to use adequate sun protection (50+ cream).
