Hygiene and Prevention

How is oral health defined?

The World Health Organization defines oral health as a state of psychophysical well-being of the person: for this reason, mouth problems, in addition to leading to aesthetic and functional deficits, can have social and psychological influences. Various diseases of the oral cavity could be avoided by relying on prevention, diagnosis and treatment programs. This is of fundamental importance because if you keep your mouth healthy you will also help maintain your well-being and your quality of life.

A thorough daily cleaning with simple brushes is not enough to eliminate deep plaque residues.

What is bacterial plaque? How is it removed?

Bacterial plaque is an accumulation of microorganisms that is deposited on the surfaces of natural teeth, prosthetic elements and in the soft tissues of the mouth. It is often pigmented by chromogenic tobacco, beverages or foods. If not completely removed, the plaque undergoes a series of mineralization processes that transform it into tartar and can only be removed with professional tools. Dental plaque takes root above all in the interdental spaces, occlusal surfaces, enamel irregularities and near the gingiva. It is necessary to know the correct brushing techniques to remove plaque effectively on a daily basis, because it is the etiological factor of many oral diseases such as caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease.

It is essential to adopt correct home oral hygiene methods and follow a preventive program of periodic recalls to professional oral hygiene.

What does professional oral hygiene consist of?

The professional oral hygiene session is a procedure indicated to:

  • Intra and extra oral control
  • The objective control of the mouth and evaluation of the state of health
  • Check gingival health through the periodontal probe
  • Motivation and instruction on the correct use of the most suitable oral hygiene products for you, monitoring your level of improvement from time to time
  • The removal of plaque and tartar with the use of manual, ultrasonic instruments or through the use of powders

It is important to remember that relying on a prevention program allows the therapist to early intercept any pathological processes both at the level of hard and soft oral tissues.

How often should professional oral hygiene be performed?

Normally, for those with good oral health, sessions take place every 6 months but each one has a personalized follow-up program based on individual, systemic and anatomical factors. We carry out periodic visits and checks at our Clinic.

Do children also have to perform professional oral hygiene?

Especially in children it is essential to carry out oral hygiene sessions to teach them how to properly brush their teeth, accustoming them to the consistency and precision of home care methods. The study assesses the need for sealing and fluoroprophylaxis, depending on age and individual carioreceptivity factors. In addition, continuous monitoring favors the interception of dental problems.
