Face lifting

What is the purpose?

The face or neck and face lifting surgery has the aim of lifting and correcting the wrinkles of the cheeks, temple zone and cheekbone area and neck. The effect is due to the repositioning of the fascial and fat structures of the face and neck. With age, the face is subject to numerous changes, due to many factors, both external such as nutrition, smoking, stress, and internal as genetic factors and skin type. These factors predispose to flaccidity and loss of skin tone, fat loss in areas such as the eyelids, the temples and the cheekbones.
Aging is also due to the loss of elasticity of the ligaments that join the SMAS layer (superficial muscle-oponeurotic system) to the surface skin tissues.Face lifting is usually performed from the fifth decade of life, the effect obtained is a ten-year rejuvenation.

What do we do?

Often the patient goes to the plastic surgeon for blepharoplasty to obtain a rejuvenation of the eye. At the end of the consultation the patient realizes the plurality of his defects and therefore requires a unique surgery that corrects the fall of the eyebrows, the eyelids, the forehead, the cheekbones, the nasogenic furrows, the relaxation of the neck and cheeks . Of course, the slightly more demanding post-operative period than a simple upper blepharoplasty must be explained in detail.

Surgical technique

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. If the patient is cooperative, it can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
The duration of the surgery is about two hours, two and a half hours if the blepharoplasty is combined.
Before the surgery, a light trichotomy is performed in the places where the scars will fall, that is, above the ear in the capillice. After incising the skin at the preauricular level and behind the ear, detachment is performed, the excess skin is then removed by repositioning and retensioning the areas of the cheekbones, temples and neck. There are various techniques that can be used: mask lift, Hamra deep lifting, composite lifting, soft lift, endoscopic lifting. If necessary, lipoaspiration can be performed at the same time, especially to correct limited areas such as the chin and neck. After the surgery, the patient will wake up with a bandage to protect the scars, which will be replaced and considerably lightened after the first night of hospitalization. Discharge can be carried out one or two days after the surgery, the assessment changes from case to case.

The postoperative

After discharge from our clinic, the patient must remain at home for two to three days. Medications are then performed in our ambulatory, where the course is checked and the points are gradually removed.

A return to work is possible after about 7/8 days, while it takes about 10 days to have a stable result. For a few weeks it is useful to rest with two pillows in bed, without bending the face, to avoid excessive swelling on waking.

The scars will be slightly red in the first weeks, but with the help of specific products they will be hidden. After healing, the scars will be almost invisible, falling into the skin folds in front and behind the ear and hidden by the hair.

Can something else be done?

Sometimes to improve the quality of the skin of the cheeks, we puropse the patient a mechanical dermabrasion: the aim is to exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin, allowing re-epithelialization and the disappearance of static wrinkles.

After the surgery, small crusts will form on the skin: these should not be removed, but their spontaneous fall must be expected. Under the crust, in fact, a re-epithelialization is created which considerably improves the quality of the skin.
